In late June, more than 2,000 healthcare workers met in Baltimore to launch SEIU Healthcare, our new national union with more than 1 million healthcare members from 38 SEIU locals, speaking with one strong voice for good jobs and quality care.
SEIU Healthcare will work to unite more healthcare workers, raise standards, and fix America's broken healthcare system. Our first big effort is to collect a million petition signatures urging Congress to provide health insurance to uninsured children.
More than 9 million children in America have no health insurance. They have no access to regular checkups, their parents struggle to afford doctors' visits when they are sick, and they often go without care. The Center for Constitutional Rights brought the first Guantánamo case to court more than five years ago. This fall, CCR will again represent Guantánamo detainees before the Supreme Court to demand their right to know why they are being held.
Now, it’s up to us to take action: to ensure our rights—and our Constitution—are rescued.
The U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the combined cases of Al Odah v. U.S. and Boumediene v. Bush this fall. Those named in the case, Fawzi al Odah, a CCR client, and Lakhdar Boumediene, were illegally taken from Pakistan and Bosnia, respectively, and transferred to the Guantanamo detention center. Their combined case represents only the third time the high court will hear a Guantanamo-related issue. The previous two times, the court sided with CCR and the Guantanamo petitioners.
These cases are the first to directly challenge the constitutionality of the Military Commissions Act of 2006 and its stripping of habeas corpus jurisdiction from federal courts. Habeas corpus is the most fundamental right in any democracy—the right to challenge the legality of your detention in a court of law. This right has existed since the Middle Ages to ensure that a monarch or other executive cannot detain whoever he wants indefinitely without due process.

Shut Down Guantánamo, Jan. 11, 2008
Friday, January 11, 2008: The 6 year anniversary of the first prisoners being brought to Guantánamo.
Last year on January 11th, after 500 people processed from the Supreme Court to the Federal court, 150 people risked arrest on behalf of the men in Guantanamo, with 88 being arrested inside the Federal Court in DC. Many of those arrested withheld their identification and took the names of men at Guantanamo.
The charges are too serious to ignore. There is credible evidence that the Vice President abused the power of his office, and not only brought us into an unneccesary war but violated the civil liberties and privacy of American citizens. It is the constitutional duty of Congress to hold impeachment hearings.
The on-going demonization of Iran as part of the "axis of evil" first initiated by George W. Bush’s 2002 State of the Union Speech, together with the more recent, growing threats of sanctions and military action by the US and Israel against Iran, all continue to seriously escalate international tension.
