"A thing is right only when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability and beauty of the community; and the community includes the soil, water, fauna and flora, as well as the people." Aldo Leopold, A Sand County Almanac, 1949
Dec 2005
Are gifts that contain gold on your shopping list this holiday season? Something you should know first: producing just one gold ring generally creates 20 tons of mine waste that can contaminate rivers and oceans. But, we have the power to change this dirty fact.
Toxic chemicals such as cyanide and mercury that are used in producing gold have polluted drinking water supplies, contaminated farmland, and harmed the health of workers and communities. Gold mining operations can also leave a trail of social destruction, displacing communities from their homelands against their will and destroying traditional livelihoods.
Safer mining practices are possible, and the holiday season is the perfect time to let the jewelry industry know that change is needed. Sign our No Dirty Gold Pledge and we'll show jewelry firms how many people want them to do the same. Your voice will let them know that the gold they buy and sell should be produced in ways that do not harm communities, workers, and the environment.
Already, Tiffany & Co. has responded to requests from concerned people like you. This is a critical first step: jewelers may not operate heavy equipment at mine sites, but more than 80 percent of gold mined each year is used to make jewelry. Jewelry firms are thus uniquely positioned to help make real change in gold mining practices.
There are some practices that are just too dirty to accept under any circumstances -- such as dumping mine waste directly into
rivers or the ocean.
"I support the No Dirty Gold campaign to end destructive gold mining practices. I call on retailers and manufacturers of gold jewelry, electronics, and other goods to work to ensure that the gold in their products was not produced at the expense of local communities, workers, and the environment. I demand that the global mining industry provide retailers and consumers an alternative to dirty gold."

Harry Potter and the No-Good Prints
July 2005
More than 12,500 people wrote to Scholastic Publishers earlier in the year, asking that they print 'Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince' on tree-friendly paper. They did not. If they had printed the book on 100 percent recycled paper, the 10.8 million print run could have saved 217,475 trees - and the living-beings that once lived there. Canadian publisher, Raincoast Books, has printed Harry Potter on 100 percent post-consumer recycled paper.

Green Personal Care Products
All descriptions and quotes come from the respected websites
I try to use products from companies that state they are either vegetarian and/or vegan, that they use recycled packaging, are enviornment friendly and are cruelty free. Ofcourse, expect to pay much more for these types of products. I find it is worth it. Most of the companies products and more senstive on the skin, along with less 'perfumey' and 'artificial' and of better quality.
For Oral care, products I use have included toothpaste and mouth wash from Jason Natural Cosmetics states; "Since 1959, before the raising of America's enviornmental consciousness, we were already committed to creating products without additives or preservatives, synthetic sweeteners or animal by-products and only from the purest, naturally resources ingredients"
They claim to not use; lauryl sulfate, saccharin, alcohol, preservatives, artificial colors or flavors, propylene glycol, sorbitol, animal by-products, and no animal testing, and use organic ingredients. I have also used the Satin Shower Body Wash with the scent of lavender, which can also be used as a bath.
In the thier toothpaste I use; Healthy Mouth Plus and Nutrismile Plus, along with thier mouthwash I use, 'Healthy Mouth' which is non-flouride. The box that contains the toothpaste, has the stamp of 'Animal Friendly' and 'Recycled / Recyclable' and state on their website; "JASON Natural Products, unlike many products on the market today which claim to be natural, are devoid of mineral oils, petrolatum, drying alcohols, PABA, isopropyl palmitate, laurel/laureth sulfates, aluminum chlorohydrates, pore-clogging ingredients and other known irritants and environmentally hazardous materials, artificial colors and animal by-products. What's more, our products involve no animal testing. They are biodegradable and packaged in recycled and/or recyclable containers."
I have found these products to keep my usually, red and bloody sore gums, healthy, and less painful, more so than anything I have ever used, and I have been 'experimenting' with oral care since I had braces, as a kid, due to my bad gums.
I have also used products by Toms' of Maine who state; "We believe in working with the pure, simple ingredients nature provides to create natural care products that are safe, effective, and pleasant to use. All of our products are packaged with respect for the environment and are never tested on animals."
I have used their Natural Toothpaste · Toothpaste for Sensitive Teeth which has also been helpful in keeping my gums healthier than they have ever been.
For hand cream, deodorant and facial products I have used Kiss My Face which states on their website; "Kiss My Face, an all-natural body care company, is no newcomer to the recent explosion of green product marketers. The brainchild of two long-time vegetarians searching for healthy body care products, Kiss My Face was founded on a 200-acre organic farm in New York's beautiful Hudson River Valley and has been operating out of a converted barn and feed store ever since. From moisturizers to liquid soaps, shave creams to body oils, Kiss My Face has something for you." and "Taking the latest scientific research and combining it with the most effective ingredients nature offers leaves no room in Kiss My Face bottles for artificial colors, unnecessary chemical additives, animal ingredients or animal testing. Vitamins, minerals and botanicals are utilized to the maximum, proving that glamour does not have to be sacrificed for healthy, cruelty-free product choices! Everybody wins -- your beautiful face and body, farmers, animals and the planet! Kiss My Face natural and organic products are the most effective you'll encounter anywhere... just ask anyone who uses them!"
I also use Nature's Gate hand cream, which claims to be; cruelty free, pH balances and biodegradable. Their website states; "Natures Gate is a company dedicated to developing personal care products based upon botanical remedies. Our philosophy derives from combining the decades-old wisdom inherent in botanical, herbal and floral treatments with modern ingredients and formulations. We bring our 27-year legacy of health and beauty expertise to you with a range of products that address personal care needs from the inside out, and bring you the highest level of integrity and value. Using all-natural herbs and pH-balanced, biodegradable formulas, each product is carefully formulated to deliver all the benefits of each unique botanical blend. All of our products reflect our ongoing efforts to preserve the earth's natural resources by being environmentally friendly and cruelty-free."
One of the newest companies I have come across is Bare Escentuals I use thier hand cream, which claims to be not tested on animals.
Avalon Organics has a great 'bath and shower gel, and liquid soap. They state they use 100% vegetarian ingredients, they do not test their products or ingredients on animals, or ask anyone else to. Thier website states; "In 1989, husband and wife team Mark and Stacey Egide founded Avalon Natural Products. Together they created a unique collection of quality personal care products for caring consumers seeking natural, organic and cruelty-free ingredient alternatives within the vegetarian ethic. The Egides chartered their values-led business with the principles of quality, innovation, integrity, and leadership."
Desert Essence states they use no animal ingredients or animal testing, along with no use of alcohol and artificial color and synthetic perfumes. I haved used their Dry by Nature Deodorant, which is aluminum free.
Origins has a wonderful line of face care products. Their webpage states; "We have always prided ourselves on being a compassionate brand with a serious commitment to the earth, animal and the environment."
The Native Botanical Co. I find their Cleansing & Detoxifying Desert Mineral Bath Salts to be very relaxing. Their products state they do no animal testing and use planet-friendly packaging.
A website, that sells their products states: "By combining Native American herbalism, modern botanical knowledge and true aromatherapy, the Native Botanical Company created truly unique and exquisite botanical body care products. Using overly abundant quantities of the finest-quality organic botanical-herbal extracts, pure essential oils, natural antioxidant vitamins, cold-pressed plant oils and exotic plant butters, these body care products pamper, cleanse, nourish and protect body, mind and spirit in an incomparable manner - in a manner you have not experienced until you have experienced Native Botanical body care."
Bio which is part of Bath and Body Works also has a wonderful line of face care. They claim to not do animal testing on 'finished products'. I assume this means that some of the ingredients have been tested on animals. 'Bath and Body Works' states; "We believe all living creatures deserve respect and would never think of testing any of our products on animals. Likewise, we don't ask anyone who may be helping us develop or make our products to conduct these kinds of tests on our behalf." on their website.
Their website states;
"By 1996 "cruelty free" shopping had become so popular as to become confusing, sometimes misleading and ultimately frustrating. Companies had begun designing their own bunny logos, abiding by their own definition of "cruelty free" or "animal friendly" without the participation of animal protection groups.
In response, seven national animal protection groups banded together to form the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics (CCIC). The CCIC promotes a single standard with an internationally recognized logo to help make shopping for animal-friendly products easier and more trustworthy."
