Which State Will Be First to Start Impeachment?
Three state legislatures, Illinois, California, and Vermont, have now introduced resolutions to send petitions to the U.S. House of Representatives to initiate impeachment proceedings against Bush (and, in the case of California, Cheney too). Minnesota, Missouri, and Oklahoma all have legislatures still active in May. Delaware, Louisana, R.I., South Carolina, and Puerto Rico are all up and running through June. New Hampshire is in session through July. Every state has legislators brave enough to take the lead if we urge them to do so and provide them with the information they need.
Some 57 million U.S. workers say they would join a union if they could. But when workers try to gain a union voice on the job, employers respond with intimidation, harassment and retaliation. And our labor laws are too weak to stop them. The Employee Free Choice Act would ensure that when a majority of employees in a workplace decide to form a union, they can do so without the debilitating obstacles employers now use to block their free choice.
With gas prices tipping the $3.00 mark even before the summer driving season, it is more clear than ever that America needs to truly address its oil dependence. A bipartisan group of senators and representatives have introduced the Fuel Choices for American Security Act (S.2025/H.R. 4409), legislation that represents an important first step in that direction. It would require the president to save as much as 10 million barrels of oil per day by 2030 by creating incentives and standards that would increase vehicle efficiency and alternative fuel use. Take action today to urge your full Congressional delegation to cosponsor S.2025/H.R. 4409.
“Every elementary school student knows that the exact same bill must pass the House and Senate before it can be signed into law and have the force of law. It is an unambiguous requirement in our Constitution.
“However, what happened on February 8 was a direct violation of the Constitution. The President signed a version of the Budget Reconciliation bill that only passed the Senate, but not the House; therefore, that bill is invalid. This serious constitutional defect occurred with the knowledge of Republican Congressional leaders, and according to media reports, with the knowledge of the White House.
“These actions not only constituted an abuse of power, but undermined the rule of law. It is not surprising that the Republicans wanted to avoid any further votes on an unpopular budget bill loaded with special interest provisions and that slashed funding for students and health care coverage for children and low-income Americans. But the Constitution does not permit shortcuts to the process by which the laws under which we live are made. Adherence to the Constitution protects the American people from arbitrary abuses of power. That is why this lawsuit is necessary: to uphold the Constitution on behalf of the American people.”
A number of colleges and universities, along with many businesses such as America Online, have reduced or eliminated their use of eggs from caged hens.

A look back at "Mission Accomplished" from three years later
Monday, May 1, will be the third anniversary of President Bush's "Mission Accomplished" speech, in which he declared "[m]ajor combat operations in Iraq have ended." Even at the time, there were serious questions about continued violence in Iraq -- and, indeed, more than 2,000 American troops have died in Iraq since Bush's speech. But, as a Media Matters for America look back at news coverage reveals, Bush's speech was greeted with widespread media approval at the time.

Republicans are urging President George W Bush to dump Dick Cheney as vice-president and replace him with Condoleezza Rice if he is serious about presenting a new face to the jaded American public. They believe that only the sacrifice of one or more of the big beasts of the jungle, such as Cheney or Donald Rumsfeld, the defence secretary, will convince voters that Bush understands the need for a fresh start. The jittery Republicans claim Bush's mini-White House reshuffle last week will do nothing to forestall the threat of losing control of Congress in the November mid-term elections.

H.R. 282, the Iran Freedom Support Act bill
On Wednesday the House passed H.R. 282, the Iran Freedom Support Act: a bill to hold the current regime in Iran accountable for its threatening behavior and to support a transition to democracy in Iran. H.R. 282 explicitly states: "Nothing in this Act shall be construed as authorizing the use of force against Iran." I have also co-sponsored H.Con.Res. 391, which calls on the President to request authorization from Congress before taking military action in Iran.

Although the media and the American public have forgotten the tragic War in Bosnia of the 1990’s, LSN ~ Landmine Survivors Network has not. The war is over, but 670,000 “live” landmines remain buried in Bosnia-Herzegovina. These subterranean weapons of terror continue to deliver devastation and suffering long after peace treaties are signed and conflicts forgotten. Landmines have killed over 4,500 people, and they continue to kill and maim innocent civilians. Bosnians live in fear—afraid to take a step, afraid to let their children play freely, afraid even to farm their land.
Whales are still in danger. Since a global ban on whaling in 1985, Japan has continued to kill whales in the name of “scientific research.” Yet legitimate scientists agree: there’s no need to kill whales in order to study them when non-lethal methods already exist.
ExxonMobil is swimming in cash...while polar bears are drowning in the Arctic. Take action today. The Iraq War is costly and unpopular. According to a recent Congressional Research Service report, the costs of the war will reach $439 billion by the end of this year. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The Congressional Budget Office projects total additional costs of $371 billion for the years 2007 to 2016, making a grand total of $811 billion.
Tragically, over 2,300 Americans troops have lost their lives and more than 17,000 more have been wounded. There is not a definite toll of Iraqi casualties, but estimates are in the tens of thousands.
Not surprisingly, the American people have turned against the Bush Administration and its failed war efforts. In a recent Washington Post-ABC News Poll, 62% of those surveyed disapproved of President Bush’s handling of Iraq and 58% felt that the Iraq War was not worth fighting. Strikingly, 79% of respondents felt that Iraq is either currently in a civil war or close to one and 54% supported decreasing U.S. forces there.
In June 2005, Senator Feingold became the first senator to offer a resolution calling on the President to offer a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq, suggesting the end of 2006 as a target date. This will be the first Senate vote on whether to bring American troops home. By writing your senator today you can increase the pressure on Congress to end this national tragedy and bring our troops home.

After intense in-fighting within the Republican caucus, the House yesterday agreed, on a largely party-line vote, to prohibit all Democratic alternatives and strengthening amendments from consideration of the Republican-crafted ethics and lobbyist reform bill - a bill which newspapers across the country are calling a "sham." Torture of detainees. Secret government kidnappings. Indefinite detention. These are not ideas that represent what American's stand for. Torture is un-American - and we need to tell our leaders, and the rest of the world, we oppose our government's unconscionable involvement in these acts!
Widespread evidence, including over 100,000 government documents released to the ACLU under the Freedom of Information Act, shows a systemic pattern of torture and abuse of detainees in U.S. custody. Still, the U.S. has failed to reverse the policies that led to these abuses, and has yet to hold a single high-ranking official responsible.

Rush Limbaugh was arrested Friday on prescription drug charges, with his attorney saying he has reached a deal with prosecutors that will eventually see the charges dismissed if he continues treatment for drug addiction.

The Bush administration is proposing to weaken health protections under the Safe Drinking Water Act. She should have no problem holding her own with the other ladies on "The View." Since leaving daytime television, O'Donnell has become a strong advocate of gay and lesbian marriage and adoption. With her partner, she operates a cruise line for gay and lesbian families that was recently featured in an HBO movie.
When officials from 122 countries come together next week to move forward with phasing out a group of dangerous chemicals, the United States will be on the sidelines yet again. The U.S. government will participate as an "observer" at the second meeting of the Stockholm Convention on persistent organic pollutants (POPs), May 1-5 in Geneva Switzerland. The U.S. signed the landmark treaty five years ago this month, but the ratification process has become mired in Congressional politics and efforts to put industry concerns above protecting our health. The myopia in Congress is stunning. It is clear that NAFTA and NAFTA-like policies implemented in Central and South America by the IMF and World Bank have wiped out millions of campesino farmers' livelihoods and caused economic crises that have forced millions to migrate to the United States. Yet some Republican leaders in Congress continue to press for expanding NAFTA — while decrying "illegal" immigration.
Public Citizen today petitioned the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to immediately remove from the market the prescription version of Xenical (orlistat, made by Roche Pharmaceuticals) because the obesity treatment has been known to cause a significant increase in aberrant crypt foci (ACF), which are widely believed to be a precursor to colon cancer. Last week, the FDA sent an “approvable” letter concerning the over-the-counter (OTC) version of orlistat to GlaxoSmithKline, which has applied to market this version. Despite safety concerns, if GlaxoSmithKline meets the conditions set by the FDA – conditions that have not been made public – this would make the drug eligible for final approval for OTC sales.
The spiritual leader of the group was none other than Senator Max Cleland, who was savegly attacked by a Republican noise machine as being soft on terror despite leaving limbs on the battlefield. Senator Cleland kicked off the event by promising that any time a Republican disparages the service of those who served honorably in any number of previous or current wars/conflicts, there was now a "band of brothers" ready to return fire.

California’s new voter registration database — whose creation the federal government once called a model for other states — may prevent thousands of eligible voters from casting ballots in a June 6 statewide election, officials fear.
A statewide database has rejected otherwise valid registrations because of computer glitches or slight discrepancies in the spelling of names. Thousands of Californians who register to vote or update their records may not receive sample ballots or be able to vote as absentees because of the state's new method of verifying identities, election officials say.

In his State of the Union address, President George W. In the past nine years, workers making the minimum wage haven’t gotten a single raise. Not one. And while the wage of $5.15 an hour has stayed the same, its value has dropped precipitously, putting workers further and further behind. In the past few years, working families have seen their retirement security go up in smoke. But in the same period, corporate CEOs have gotten enormous new retirement packages worth millions a year. Too often, executives' compensation packages have little to do with the performance of the companies they lead. And while executives are required to report their pay to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), they often try to hide the true amounts behind complex accounting tricks. But now we can act to help stop this abuse. The SEC is considering new rules that would force companies to describe executive compensation packages in plain English and require them to estimate the total dollar value of all the pay. Farm workers who pick tomatoes for McDonald's hamburgers and Chipotle's burritos earn about 45 cents for every 32-pound container of tomatoes they pick, a subpoverty wage that has remained stagnant for almost 30 years. Although Taco Bell signed an agreement last year with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers to pay an additional one cent per pound for tomatoes it purchases, McDonald's and Chipotle have refused to sign a similar agreement to raise wages in the fields. Tell McDonald's and Chipotle to support fair wages for farm workers and sign the agreement with the Coalition of Immokalee Workers now.
Two more coal miners died this week, bringing the total deaths so far this year to 26. It’s time to stop this crisis. Tell your members of Congress to support mine safety improvements. This year began with a terrible workplace tragedy, the explosion at the Sago Mine in West Virginia that claimed the lives of 12 miners. More than 24 coal miners have died in workplace accidents already in 2006, making it crystal clear that we need strong protection for our miners. While you were paying $50 for a tank of gas, an oil company was posting record profits. And what is the Republican leadership doing to help? Giving subsidies to the big oil and gas industry, that's what. There is a cost to Republican corruption, and we are all seeing it as the price per gallon ticks up day by day at the gas station. For too long, the Republican-led Congress has allowed the special interests to get a hold of the agenda and under their influence we've witnessed nothing but giveaways to big corporations and industries that do not need a handout. We have seen legislation like the energy bill that sent $8 billion to big oil while doing nothing for gas prices and the Medicare bill that confuses and overcharges seniors. We have even seen them drag their feet on necessary meaningful reform for honest government. Congress has turned from the "People's House" to the auction house and it is time we took it back for American families.
Will the president actually do something about what he called America's "addiction" to oil, or will he continue down his routine results-free path of catchy campaign slogans and empty promises? Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) recently introduced the Stop Deceptive Advertising for Women's Services Act, which would require the Federal Trade Commission to enforce truth-in-advertising standards for fake "clinics" or so-called "crisis pregnancy centers" (CPCs). Many CPCs pose as objective health facilities using neutral-sounding names and deceptive advertising practices that lead women facing unintended pregnancies to believe that they will be offered unbiased counseling and a full range of reproductive health services. Unsuspecting women are lured into these CPCs with the offer of free pregnancy testing or HIV tests...
One billion federal tax dollars have gone into abstinence-only programs since 1996, and $115 million dollars will be allocated to Community-Based Abstinence Education programs in the 2006 fiscal year. These programs stress abstinence as the only way to prevent unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and do not provide information about birth control methods, except to stress their failure rates........In December 2004, Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) released a report ( see "Reality Bites: The Truth About Sex, Teens, and Abstinence-Only Education" below ) that exposed many of the factual inaccuracies presented in abstinence-only curricula, such as the erroneous claims that condoms don't work 30 percent of the time and that HIV could be transmitted through tears and sweat.

It's official: the Georgia government has declared war on the Constitution
Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue caved to the religious right and signed two bills into law that promote religion in the public square, clearly violating the Constitution. Governor Perdue's decision to sign the two bills into law not only legalizes the display of the Ten Commandments in government buildings, but also creates Bible classes in the states public schools- an appalling move that actually makes the Bible an official text book for Georgia's students.
A leading U.S. government storm researcher said that the record hurricane season last year can be attributed to global warming. "The hurricanes we are seeing are indeed a direct result of climate change and it's no longer something we'll see in the future, it's happening now," said Greg Holland, a division director at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado.
Under the pressure of soaring oil prices and growing environmental constraints, momentum is gathering for a major international switch from fossil fuels to renewable bioenergy, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation. “The gradual move away from oil has begun. Over the next 15 to 20 years we may see biofuels providing a full 25 percent of the world’s energy needs,” Alexander Müller, the new Assistant Director-General for the Sustainable Development Department of FAO said here.

The bill they are trying to foist on the American people fails to restrict campaign fundraising activities by lobbyists, fails to ban gifts from lobbyists, fails to curb revolving door abuses, fails to create an independent oversight and compliance office, and bans privately sponsored travel - but only until after the next election. It is indeed a sad joke. Even more remarkable, House Republican leaders are considering invoking a “closed rule” to prohibit any amendments or even debate on the House floor. Tell your Representative that you will not be snowed by this pathetic bill.

The Food and Drug Administration has overlooked substantial evidence that irradiated foods may not be safe for human consumption. Food & Water Watch and the Center for Food Safety have repeatedly informed FDA that numerous studies published in peer-reviewed scientific journals show genetic damage and other harmful effects from eating irradiated foods. The Bush Administration is proposing to weaken health protections under the Safe Drinking Water Act. This change may result in up to three times or more cancer and other disease-causing chemical contaminants in the drinking water for millions of Americans than is currently allowed. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed policy change defines "affordability" under the Safe Drinking Water Act in a way that will seriously undermine health protections. If the EPA proposal stands, it would allow water utilities to cut corners and serve contaminated drinking water, arguing that it costs too much to clean it up, while still labeling the tap water as "protective of health."
