Addiction
'Addiction' covers many parts of my life. I hope to enlighten those interested, on how deep rooted and effected a life or lives can be because of addiction. I will be talking about drugs and alcohol, along with sex, when it comes to substance abuseand addiction. I also will be talking about addictive behaviors, for example food addiction, self abuse and co-dependency. I am not claiming to be a professional, although I do have some schooling in substance abuse. I will be speaking from personal experience.
Addiction can effect everyone in different ways. Addiction can cause subtle changes,
but mostly drastic changes in someone's life, and those around the person who is addicted.
'Addiction' as described in the 'Oxford American Dictionary' under 'Addict' states;
1. A person who is addicted to something, especially drugs.
2. To be or cause to be dependent on a drug
3. To be or cause a devotee, to do something habitually.
'Addicted' as described in the same dicitonary;
1. Doing or using something as a habit or compulsively.
2. Devoted to something as a hobby or interest.
I believe the general population knows what addiction means. There seems to be two mind-sets or views people have of addicts. One is that those addicted are weak and just don't want to stop. Second is that addiction is a disease, and the person addicted may want to stop, but cannot.
I have been on both sides of the arguement. Before I was an addict, I believed the first view. After I became an addict, I came to realize what alot of people do, that addiction is a disease.
In 1956, the 'American Hospital Association' and the 'American Medical Association' labeled alcoholism as a disease, but the act of overdrinking or indulging has been noted all through history.
For example, the earliest known (as of my source published in 1986 'Getting Better in A.A. - Nan Robertson) record of alcohol consumption date back to the Mesopotaminans, 4,000 years before Christ. Also, in 1700 B.C., the Babylonians had a code that included restrictions on the sale and consumption of alcohol. Around this time, the emperor of China, Chung K'iang, had drunkards hung.
There is mention of the perils of over drinking all throughout history, both culturally and religiously.
